Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need any training gear/ equipment for the hands-on training classes?

-Yes, each student taking the 40-Hr and the 80-Hr underground new miner training will be required to provide their own steel toe metatarsal boots and long sleeve shirts. All the other necessary equipment such as glasses, gloves, hard hats and hand tools will be provided during training. Metatarsal boots can be purchased at Garrett Industrial Supply. 

 

Am I guaranteed a job in the mining or oil& gas industry after my academy training?

We are strictly a training facility and do not offer employment opportunities upon training completion. However, we usually refer our best students to company recruiters in West Virginia and Pennsylvania especially in the mining industry.

Will I be able to use my certification in any U.S state?

All Industrial/Oil & Gas certifications can be used in any US State. West Virginia requires every miner to take an 80-hr underground course, 40 hr surface mine training and a WV Mine Foreman Continuing Education class if they qualify.

 

How long will my certification be valid for?

Each training course has a different expiration period and most require refreshers. Please visit our classes page to learn about training certifications.

Upon completion of a Safeland class, how long does it take to receive my card?

Upon successful completion of the class, you will be issued a temporary card that is good for 45 days. A hard card with your picture on it is usually received in about 30 days.

​

How much of a notice do you need to conduct training at our facility?

Many times, classes can be scheduled the next day, depending on our schedule and availability of materials.
